Types Of Information Systems

Different types of information systems have been developed to meet a variety of business needs and these systems are known as computer based information systems. These information systems are Transaction Processing Systems (TPS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Office Automation Systems (OAS), Decision Support Systems (DSS), Executive Support Systems (ESS) and Knowledge Work Systems (KWS).
 

Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)

This computerized system that performs and records everyday transactions necessary to the nature of the business. Any business activity such as sales, purchase, production, delivery, payment involves transaction and these transactions are to be organized and manipulate to generate information for external use. Services like banking, hospital, education, entertainment, tourism and accounting depends on information system for their survival.

Management Information Systems (MIS)

Management information systems collect and process information from different sources in institute decision-making in managerial level. The systems provide information in the form of pre specified reports and displays to support business decision making. Management information systems use the data collected by the TPS to provide administrators with the necessary control reports.

Office Automation Systems (OAS)

Office Automation Systems such as word processing systems were developed to support office and clerical workers it helps perform record keeping, writing, and calculations efficiently.

Decision Support Systems (DSS)

Decision Support Systems are organizational computer based systems that help manager in decision making that needs modeling, formulation, calculating, comparing, selecting the best option or predict the situations.

Executive Support Systems (ESS)

Executive Support Systems helps facilitates and supports senior executives information and decision making needs. It makes available access to internal and external information. ESS allows organizations to transform data into easily accessible reports for executive use such as billing, accounting and staffing departments. It improves decision making for executives.

Knowledge Work Systems (KWS)

Knowledge management systems are knowledge-based information systems that support the creation, organization and dissemination of business knowledge to employees and managers throughout a company.

Knowledge work systems help create and integrate new knowledge within the organization. Knowledge management systems classify knowledge and experience makes the collected knowledge and experience available when needed and provide links to external sources of knowledge.
